Sell your car in Latvia

Ownership changes are registered with CSDD (Road Traffic Safety Directorate), either online at e.csdd.lv or at a CSDD branch. The decisive step is the seller's confirmation in the register: ownership, compulsory insurance liability and responsibility for traffic offences pass to the buyer at that moment. Posting on MotorHangar is free and takes about three minutes; you don't need the paperwork to publish.

Step by step

  1. Make sure no prohibition is registered on the car Required by law

Under Latvian road traffic law, an ownership change cannot be registered if the vehicle has a registered prohibition on disposal, registration or similar (e.g. from a creditor or bailiff). Check the vehicle's status before agreeing the sale.

  2. Buyer submits an application on e.csdd.lv Required by law Buyer

In the ownership change section of e.csdd.lv the buyer applies to acquire the specific vehicle. The registered owner is notified at their registered e-mail address.

  3. Seller confirms the ownership change within 5 days Required by law

The seller approves the change on e.csdd.lv within 5 days of the buyer's application; if the car was not previously removed from registration for sale, that is done in the same step. Ownership passes to the buyer at the moment of confirmation, so confirm only once you have been paid.

  4. Buyer takes out OCTA insurance Required by law Buyer

Once the seller confirms, the seller's compulsory motor liability (OCTA) for the vehicle ends and the buyer becomes responsible for traffic violations; the buyer can buy an OCTA policy on the basis of the register entry.

  5. Buyer gets the new registration certificate Required by law Buyer

The buyer requests a new registration certificate on e.csdd.lv with a delivery address in Latvia, or collects it at a CSDD branch. The ownership change can also be done entirely at a CSDD branch or through participating dealers.
