Step by step
-
Check that the car has a valid SDK Required by law
Every vehicle needs an owner declaration code (savininko deklaravimo kodas, SDK) to be sold or registered; a new SDK is generated at each change of owner. The buyer can check online that the SDK is valid and belongs to you, and whether the car is seized or pledged; write the SDK in the contract.

Sign a sales contract Required by law Seller and buyer
Regitra recommends its updated sales contract template. Show the buyer your ID, and state the real price, mileage and defects, and whether the compulsory third-party liability (civil liability) insurance is transferred to the buyer with the car.

Buyer files the acquisition declaration Required by law Buyer
After the contract is signed, the buyer first submits an acquisition declaration (įgijimo deklaracija) to Regitra, online at eregitra.lt or at a branch, with the contract details and SDK. Since 1 November 2022 the buyer has 5 working days.

Confirm the transfer declaration Required by law
The seller then confirms by submitting a transfer declaration (perleidimo deklaracija), also free online; the seller has its own 5 working days (10 in total for both parties). Only then does the buyer get a new SDK, and the seller is no longer linked to the vehicle.

Stay safe when buyers contact you
- Do not hand over the keys before the buyer has filed the acquisition declaration and you have confirmed it (Regitra's '3-step rule').
- Write the real price, mileage and known defects in the contract: Regitra notes it becomes the key evidence if a dispute arises.
