1. Check liens, damage history and unpaid fees Recomendado Vendedor y comprador

   Before the sale, check for liens (veðbönd) with a lien certificate (veðbókarvottorð), the vehicle's damage history and unpaid public fees such as vehicle tax (bifreiðagjald) or mileage charge (kílómetragjald). The buyer can also have the car's condition checked at an inspection station.

2. Pay all vehicle taxes and charges Requerido por ley

   An ownership transfer can only be registered when all vehicle taxes and other charges attached to the vehicle have been paid.

3. Sign a sales contract and deed Recomendado Vendedor y comprador

   Buyer and seller are advised to sign a sales contract and deed (kaupsamningur og afsal), often a single document; a template is available on Ísland.is. It stays between the parties and is not sent to Samgöngustofa.

4. Seller files the ownership transfer on Ísland.is Requerido por ley

   The seller completes the ownership transfer notice (tilkynning um eigendaskipti) on Ísland.is with electronic ID and pays the fee. Samgöngustofa says to report it as soon as possible, and its 2023 announcement states it must be done within 7 days of the sale.

5. Buyer signs the notice electronically Requerido por ley Comprador

   The buyer (and any co-owner or registered user) signs the notice electronically; the transfer is then registered automatically and both parties get confirmation in their Ísland.is mailbox. Without electronic ID, a paper form signed by both parties and certified by two witnesses aged 18+ is submitted to Samgöngustofa, which can take up to a week.

6. Hand over the car only after the transfer is signed Recomendado

   Do not hand over the vehicle until the transfer has been signed. Once it is registered, the compulsory liability insurance moves automatically to the new owner and ends for the seller.

• Until Samgöngustofa registers the transfer, the seller is responsible for vehicle taxes, insurance and any damage, so file the transfer promptly and do not hand over the car before it is signed.
• Confirm the seller owns the vehicle or is authorised to sell it, and check for liens before paying.
