Let the buyer check the car with a Certificate of Clearance Recommended Buyer
Before agreeing the sale, the prospective buyer can apply (form TD87(S), free, also online) for a Certificate of Clearance showing whether the vehicle is involved in listed offences, court orders or unpaid fines. It is valid for up to 72 hours and protects the new owner against licence suspension for earlier offences. It is not mandatory.

Stay safe when buyers contact you
- The registered owner is not necessarily the legal owner; the Transport Department advises buyers to get a Certificate of Clearance before agreeing the purchase.
- Until the buyer registers the transfer, traffic tickets and liabilities still fall on the seller, so make sure page 1 actually reaches a Licensing Office within 72 hours.
