Manual transfer: complete and sign Form C and the other required forms (e.g. VRC) with photos, then receive endorsed vehicle documents. Online transfer: the new owner's biometrics are captured. Check whether you must keep your number plate Recommended
DVLA has announced reforms under which the registration number belongs to the owner: the seller removes the plate when selling and the buyer applies for a new number. Ask DVLA whether this is already in force when you sell.

Stay safe when buyers contact you
- DVLA warns that possessing a car or using its number plate does not make you the owner: only the official DVLA transfer does, so finish it at the office rather than handing over signed papers.
- DVLA says it cannot change its records if the registered owner did not sign the transfer and cannot be traced; the buyer would then need a court order, so the seller should attend the transfer in person.
