Sell your car in Denmark

Ownership changes are registered with Motorstyrelsen (the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency) in Motorregistret, and in a private sale the buyer must re-register the car within 4 weekdays. Until then the seller remains responsible for the car's periodic taxes and liability insurance, so the key step is making sure the transfer is completed. Posting on MotorHangar is free and takes about three minutes; you don't need the paperwork to publish.

Step by step

  1. Check the inspection status before selling Required by law

A car over 4 years old must have been inspected (synet) within the last 2 years, otherwise ownership cannot be changed until it has passed inspection. An inspection is also required if the car has been deregistered for more than a year or was registered abroad.

  2. Let the buyer check for registered debt Recommended Seller and buyer

The buyer can search the car's frame number (stelnummer) in Bilbogen on tinglysning.dk to see whether any debt is registered on it, and should confirm that the frame number on the registration certificate matches the one on the car. Debt registered on the car follows the car, so clear it before the sale.

  3. Sign a bill of sale (slutseddel) Recommended Seller and buyer

Write a slutseddel with the sale date, seller's name, buyer's name and address, both signatures and the car's frame number and make or registration number (buyer's date of birth and driving licence number are optional). The seller needs it if the buyer fails to re-register the car.

  4. Transfer ownership in the Ejerskifte app or Motorregistret Required by law Seller and buyer

In the Ejerskifte app (private-to-private sales, not vans), the seller logs in with MitID, selects the car and generates a code; the buyer logs in with MitID, enters the code, chooses insurance and pays. Alternatively the buyer re-registers in Motorregistret (TastSelv) using the registration certificate's kontroltal or kodedel 1 and 2, or at a number plate operator.

DKK 340 in the app or Motorregistret; DKK 380 plus the operator's own fee at a number plate operator

  5. Buyer takes out insurance as part of the transfer Required by law Buyer

The buyer must choose an insurer and request liability insurance during the re-registration; the transfer cannot be completed without it. Once approved, the registration cannot be undone, and a new registration certificate arrives by post within 10 weekdays.

  6. Confirm the transfer, or ask Motorstyrelsen to deregister the car Recommended

The buyer has 4 weekdays to re-register or deregister the car. The seller can check in TastSelv (Motor og Motorregistret) that the car has moved to 'Historiske'; if not, the seller can send the slutseddel via TastSelv (Manglende ejerskifte) and Motorstyrelsen deregisters the car, no earlier than 4 weekdays after the sale. The seller's periodic tax is then adjusted to the actual ownership period.

Stay safe when buyers contact you

  • Until the buyer re-registers the car, the seller remains responsible for periodic taxes and liability insurance: do not let the car go without making sure the transfer is done.
  • Check that the frame number on the registration certificate matches the one on the car, and search Bilbogen on tinglysning.dk for hidden debt.
