Vende tu auto en Alemania

There is no notary or central registry step: the buyer re-registers the car at their local vehicle registration office (Zulassungsbehörde), and the seller must report the sale to the registration office. The single most important step for the seller is to report the sale (or deregister the car before handover), because until the change is recorded the seller keeps paying vehicle tax and insurance. Paso a paso

  1. Gather the papers and keys Requerido por ley

Have ready the registration certificate Part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, formerly Fahrzeugschein), Part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II, formerly Fahrzeugbrief), the latest main inspection report (HU-Bericht) and all original keys. The buyer cannot re-register the car without Part I and Part II.

  2. Consider deregistering the car before the sale Recomendado

The safest option is to take the car off the road (Außerbetriebsetzung) before handing it over, in person at the registration office or online via i-Kfz for cars registered after 1 January 2015. Once the plates' security codes are exposed the plate is invalid and the car may no longer be driven or parked on public roads; the fee is set by the federal fee schedule (GebOSt).

  3. Sign a written purchase contract Recomendado Vendedor y comprador

A written contract is recommended even between private individuals. A private seller may exclude liability for defects, but must disclose all known defects and any known accident damage, and should list them in the contract. ADAC offers a free model contract for private sales.

  4. Get paid before handing over anything Recomendado Vendedor y comprador

Money, car, keys and papers are normally exchanged at the same time. ADAC suggests an instant SEPA transfer (Echtzeitüberweisung) made in front of you, or cash with care, and warns against PayPal, whose buyer protection excludes motor vehicles and whose payments can be reversed. Hand over Part II only once the full price has arrived.

  5. Hand over the car, keys and both registration parts Requerido por ley

Give the buyer the keys, Zulassungsbescheinigung Part I and Part II and the latest HU report, and keep a signed copy of the contract.

  6. Report the sale to the registration office Requerido por ley

If the car is sold while still registered, the previous keeper must notify the registration office without delay, giving the plate number, the buyer's name and full address and confirmation that the registration certificate was handed over (§ 15(5) FZV). This is unnecessary if the buyer has already re-registered. Many offices accept it online; Munich, for example, takes it free of charge through its contact form.

  7. Tell the car insurer about the sale Requerido por ley Vendedor y comprador

Under § 97 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG) the sale must be reported to the insurer without delay by the seller or the buyer. If nobody reports it, the insurer may be released from paying claims that occur more than a month later.

    Versicherungsvertragsgesetz (VVG) § 97
  8. Buyer registers the car in their name Requerido por ley Comprador

Without delay after the change of keeper, the buyer reports to the registration office of their place of residence, applies for a new Part I and has Part II updated (§ 15(5) FZV). They need Parts I and II, an electronic insurance confirmation (eVB), a valid HU, ID and a SEPA mandate for vehicle tax; this can also be done online via i-Kfz.

Mantente seguro cuando los compradores se pongan en contacto contigo

  • Do not accept PayPal for a car: its buyer protection excludes motor vehicles and payments can be reversed after the car is gone.
  • Be wary of 'buyers' who send a payment confirmation and have a freight company collect the car; they may later claim it never arrived and freeze the money.
  • Do not reply 'OK' or confirm details by email to unknown buyers: some scammers treat the reply as a binding contract at a lower price and threaten legal action.
  • Never send copies or scans of the vehicle papers or your ID; they are used to clone stolen cars.
  • Meet in daylight in a busy public place and bring a companion, especially if you are paid in cash.
