Get the documents your province requires before listing Recomendado
Some provinces require a pre-sale package or inspection: Ontario sellers must give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package, and Manitoba sellers must hand over a valid Certificate of Inspection or tell the buyer one is needed. Check your province below.
Government of Ontario - Buy or sell a used vehicle in Ontario -
Accept only secure payment Recomendado
ICBC recommends accepting only cash or a bank draft, not a personal cheque, and verifying a bank draft with the issuing institution before finalizing the sale.
ICBC - Selling a used vehicle -
Sign over the registration and write a bill of sale Requerido por ley Vendedor y comprador
Complete the transfer section of the registration or ownership document (e.g. Ontario's Application for Transfer, Manitoba's Transfer of Ownership Document) and give the buyer a bill of sale signed by both parties with the date, price and vehicle details.
Government of Ontario - Buy or sell a used vehicle in Ontario -
Remove your licence plates Requerido por ley
In most provinces plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle: Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Manitoba sellers keep or return their plates. They can usually be moved to your next vehicle or returned.
Service Nova Scotia - Vehicle transfers -
Notify the registry where your province requires it Recomendado
Some provinces require the seller to report the sale: Nova Scotia's notice of sale goes back to the Registry right away, and Newfoundland and Labrador requires a notice of sale within 10 days.
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador - Selling a vehicle -
Cancel or transfer your insurance Recomendado
Cancel your policy or move it to another vehicle once the car is sold.
ICBC - Selling a used vehicle -
Buyer registers the vehicle and pays sales tax Requerido por ley Comprador
The buyer registers the car in their name within the provincial deadline (6 days in Ontario, 10 days in British Columbia, 30 days in Nova Scotia) and pays the provincial sales tax on the private sale at that point.

Reglas que cambian por región
- Ontario
- The seller must give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package, a bill of sale, the signed Application for Transfer on the back of the ownership permit, and a Safety Standards Certificate if one is required. You keep your licence plates and the plate portion of the permit, and can claim a refund for full months left on stickers. The buyer registers within 6 days and generally pays 13% retail sales tax on the greater of the price or the wholesale value. Fuente
- British Columbia
- Complete the four-page Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) with original signatures and give the buyer the signed registration (APV250) after you are paid. Remove your plates (they remain ICBC property) and cancel or transfer your insurance. The buyer must register at an Autoplan broker within 10 days and pays the taxes; ICBC strongly recommends going to the broker together. Fuente
- Alberta
- Complete a standard bill of sale, which gathers the seller information the new owner needs to license and register the vehicle. Buyers are advised to get a vehicle information report and a personal property lien search on the VIN from a registry agent, and to register at a registry agent as soon as possible. Fuente
- Saskatchewan
- SGI provides a Bill of Sale/Letter of Gift form so the new owner has enough information to license and register the vehicle. Buyers can check liens through the Personal Property Registry (Information Services Corporation) using the VIN. Fuente
- Manitoba
- Fill in the date and odometer reading and sign the Transfer of Ownership Document on the registration card; the buyer also signs and presents it to re-register. A valid Certificate of Inspection is required to register the vehicle, so give the buyer yours or tell them they will need one. Fuente
- Quebec
- Both the seller and the buyer must be present at an SAAQ service outlet (or use a proxy) to transfer ownership and registration. Passenger vehicles under 25 years old registered in one name, with no unpaid fines, can instead be transferred online through SAAQclic, where both parties need an account; don't let the buyer leave until they accept the transfer. Fuente
- Nova Scotia
- Sign the back of the Certificate of Registration, give the buyer Part 1 of the Transfer of Title, and return the signed notice of sale to the Registry of Motor Vehicles right away. Remove your plates (move them to another vehicle or return them for a refund). The buyer has 30 days to register and pays 14% Nova Scotia sales tax on the higher of the price or the Red Book value. Fuente
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Use the bill of sale on the back of the Vehicle Registration Document, signed by every registered owner; if the price is below the Canadian Red Book wholesale value, both parties sign a witnessed affidavit. Notify the Registrar of Motor Vehicles within 10 days with a notice of sale (online via MyGovNL for buyers with an NL licence), and the buyer must transfer within 10 days. Fuente
- Northwest Territories
- The seller provides either the registration certificate with the buyer and seller sections completed or a fully executed bill of sale. Transfers are done in person at a driver and vehicle office. Fuente
- Nunavut
- Seller and buyer complete the Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale (form A-116); blocks A and B must be filled in for it to be accepted for registration. The buyer presents it to Motor Vehicle services as proof of the change in ownership. Fuente
Mantente seguro cuando los compradores se pongan en contacto contigo
- Accept only cash or a bank draft, and verify a bank draft with the issuing bank before handing over the car and signed registration.
- Remove your plates before the buyer drives away: in most provinces they are tied to you, not the vehicle.
- Buyers should run a lien search on the VIN (e.g. Personal Property Registry, or the UVIP in Ontario) so no debt follows the car.
