Sell your car in Belarus

In Belarus a car sale between two private individuals must be made in a written contract, which is then either registered free of charge at a GAI (traffic police) registration office or certified by a notary. Ownership passes at that moment. The seller takes the car off the register and the buyer registers it within 30 days, usually in the same visit. Posting on MotorHangar is free and takes about three minutes; you don't need the paperwork to publish.

Step by step

  1. Draw up a written sale contract Required by law Seller and buyer

Contracts between individuals must be in writing. They must include the parties' full names, ID numbers and addresses; the make, model, year and VIN; the details of the registration certificate; the price and payment terms; a statement that the car is not sold, pledged, leased, under arrest or in dispute; and each party's liability.

  2. Register the contract at GAI or have it notarized Required by law Seller and buyer

The parties choose between registering the contract with GAI and having a notary certify it. GAI registration normally happens together with deregistration or registration of the car. It is done in three copies, with both parties or their representatives present, and costs nothing. Ownership passes to the buyer at the moment of registration or notarization.

  3. Present the car for GAI inspection Required by law Seller and buyer

Registration actions require the vehicle to be shown at a GAI registration office. The VIN must be accessible and clean, and the office photographs the car and its identification number. A 'matches' result is valid for 30 days.
