Confirm you can sell and that no finance is owing Recomendado
Make sure you are entitled to sell the vehicle and that no money is owed on it. Buyers commonly run a PPSR search on the VIN, which shows if there is a security interest (money owing) and usually written-off and stolen status.

Get the inspection certificate your state requires Recomendado
Some states require a certificate before the vehicle can change hands: Queensland requires a current safety certificate before disposing of a registered vehicle, and Victoria requires a roadworthy certificate issued within 30 days before the sale (with exemptions). Other states do not require one for a standard transfer; check your state below.
Queensland Government - Safety certificates -
Complete the transfer or disposal paperwork with the buyer Obrigatório por lei Vendedor e comprador
Record the buyer's full name, address and licence details, the date of sale and the sale price, and have both parties sign where the state's form requires it. Most states let you do this online or on the form attached to the registration certificate.
WA Department of Transport - Selling a vehicle -
Do not sign over the car until you are paid Recomendado
NSW advises not to sign any transfer document until you have received payment or trade.
NSW Government - Selling a used car -
Lodge the notice of disposal by your state's deadline Obrigatório por lei
Tell the transport agency you no longer own the vehicle: within 14 days in NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory, and within 7 days in Western Australia and Tasmania. Until the agency records the new owner you can be held liable for the buyer's fines, tolls and camera-detected offences.
NSW Government - Selling a used car -
Remove toll tags and stop direct debits Recomendado
Remove the e-tag and delete the vehicle from your toll account, and consider cancelling registration direct debits, so you are not billed for the buyer's use.
Queensland Government - Transfer registration in person -
Buyer transfers the registration and pays duty Obrigatório por lei Comprador
The buyer must transfer the registration into their name, generally within 14 days of purchase, and pays the transfer fee and vehicle registration (stamp) duty. Late transfers can attract a late fee.

Regras que mudam por região
- New South Wales
- Lodge a notice of disposal with Service NSW within 14 days of the sale, even as a private seller; it is free online or at a Service NSW centre but a late fee may apply. It records your details, the registration number, sale date, sale price and the buyer's details. Remove your e-tag, and note that selling more than 4 vehicles in 12 months may make you a motor dealer needing a licence. Fonte
- Victoria
- Notify VicRoads within 14 days of the sale by completing a notice of disposal with the buyer, most easily online through myVicRoads. An original roadworthy certificate issued within 30 days before the date of sale is needed for the transfer unless the vehicle or transfer type is exempt. If you do not submit the notice you may be liable for fines and tolls after the sale. Fonte
- Queensland
- You must obtain a current safety certificate before disposing of a registered vehicle (other than to a dealer); certificates from private sellers last 2 months or 2,000 km, and vehicles with gas fittings also need a gas certificate under 3 months old. On the day of sale complete and have the buyer sign Part B (seller's copy) of form F3520; the buyer lodges Part A and must transfer within 14 days, paying the fee and duty. Keep Part B and lodge it yourself if the buyer does not. Fonte
- Western Australia
- Notify the Department of Transport within 7 days that you no longer own the vehicle, giving the buyer's name and address, or face a penalty. Transfer online via DoTDirect, or complete form MR9 and lodge the blue seller's copy within 7 days, giving the buyer the red purchaser's copy and the current vehicle licence paper. Optional (personalised) plates must be transferred to the buyer or returned before the sale. Fonte
- South Australia
- Lodge a notice of disposal with Service SA; it is free and can be done online if the buyer is from SA (a paper NOD is needed for interstate buyers). You need the sale date and time, price and the buyer's name and SA licence or client number. The vehicle stays in your name until the buyer completes the transfer, which they must do within 14 days. Fonte
- Tasmania
- The disposal must be submitted to Transport Tasmania within seven days of the sale, online or on the paper form at Service Tasmania, and cannot be processed without the new operator's full name and address. No automatic confirmation is sent, and you may be liable for camera-detected offences until the new operator is recorded. Fonte
- Australian Capital Territory
- Complete the 'notice of disposal' and the 'application to transfer vehicle registration' on the back of the current registration certificate, both signed by buyer and seller, and give the buyer the transfer section. Notify Access Canberra online (if both hold ACT licences), by upload, mail or at a service centre. The buyer must transfer within 14 days of sale or a late fee applies. Fonte
- Northern Territory
- Lodge a notice of disposal with the Motor Vehicle Registry within 14 days of sale, using the notice on the back of the registration certificate or form R6, signed by both parties. It needs the buyer's full name, address and date of birth, the sale date and price; until MVR accepts it you remain liable for infringements. Give the buyer proof of ownership such as a receipt. Fique seguro quando compradores entrarem em contato com você
- Ask buyers to run, or run yourself, a PPSR search on the VIN: it shows whether there is money owing on the car and usually whether it is recorded as written-off or stolen.
- Do not sign any transfer document until you have received payment.
- Lodge the notice of disposal straight away: until the agency records the new owner you can be held responsible for the buyer's fines, tolls and camera offences.
